The Ting Tings: No 1

Duo bumps Madonna off top slot
19 May 08 - The Ting Tings have knocked Madonna of the number one slot with their single That's Not My Name.

Their album We Changed Nothing is also now out and the band told 6 Music that record was made under certain restrictions.

One half of the duo, Jules De Martino, said: “We produced it ourselves. When we started recording we had this philosophy really about getting into the studio and if we didn’t get a fix within an hour or two max - we scrapped it.

“And so we ended up recording the whole album – ten songs finished – giving to everybody rather than trying to give people 20 songs and saying ‘what do you think, should it make the album or not?’.

“We just mastered the whole thing and there’s nothing else – that’s the album – and everyone was like ‘this is great’.”

Singer Katie White went on to respond to accusations that their act is more style than content.

She said: “I find that the funny thing is when you get people like sniping at you going their a hyped band– hyped, hyped.

“And it was like ‘well, who hyped us? The people that are saying we are hyped – hyped us. We didn’t pay them you know.”
