The Ivor Novello awards

Winehouse and Radiohead up for gongs
22 May 08 - The prestigious Ivor Novello awards is about to get underway and the likes of Radiohead and Amy Winehouse are up for gongs.

The event is all about celebrating songwriters and composers in the music industry and big names will be taking to the red carpet later on today (22 May) which is at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

Chairman

Gary Osborne, chairman of the Ivor Novello awards committee, told 6 Music that some big names will be handing out the awards as well as collecting them.

He said: “One of the awards - I won’t tell you who the recipient is - but it’s being given by Robert Plant. Those are the kind of people who love to be at this award.

“And the interesting thing is it’s low profile because we’re not on the telly. It’s just for the 1200 people in that room.”

Last year

One band who was nominated for a gong last year were Hot Chip. They were up for Best Contemporary Song with Over and Over but were beaten by Amy Winehouse.

Joe from the band said the event is an important one: “For the people writing songs that’s obviously….it’s what they love and what they work for so it’s very important yeah.

“And it gives you something to take home to show your gran as well which is nice.”
